Where’s Wall Doh!?

I stumbled upon this photo from a thumb drive with plenty of photos on it. I vaguely recall taking it, and I knew it was somewhere in Europe based on the distance posted. But where? Well, the research didn’t take long, and this signpost is near Amsterdam Centraal railway station.

There’s some interesting history behind these signs. Namely, it’s not the only one. According to the story, a GI friend of the owner began the tradition by putting them up during WW2. But the tradition continued through the decades, with others erecting signs around the world.

Wall, South Dakota, is very close to the Badlands. So it is somewhat of a tourist destination because of Mount Rushmore and the world famous Wall Drug. Which is now a huge multistore shopping mall. The owners themselves began a marketing campaign of erecting billboards along Interstate 90.

I guess in 1972 I found the sign amusing enough to take a picture. Who knew I’d find a use for it 54 years later?

I’ve been to Wall Drug twice. The first time was on a family trip in 1971 from Van Nuys, CA to Lincoln, NE for a wedding. Two families rented an RV and set out on a road trip. It was quite the adventure. Mark & I stopped there a couple years ago as we traveled across the northern US. It’s one big curio shop for sure.
