Ok Boomer! The Sunday 6 Pack

Next Saturday is Halloween. I probably could drum up several lists involving the holiday. But I like these to be a bit on the quirky side. So instead of Halloween movies, or best costumes, I think I’ll give you the following…

The worst candies given out around my neighborhood when I was trick-or-treating.

Tootsie Rolls- These dominated Halloween during my youth. When I was a youngster, I wasn’t a chocolate fan. So these weren’t touched by me. When they started making flavored ones, they were better in my opinion.

Chuckles- The precursor to Gummie bears. I’d rather eat Tootsie Rolls than these gelatinous globs

Sugar Daddy- I love caramel. But this was a piece of solid caramel on a stick. Good luck finishing one. Because if you attempted to really work on one, you’d need a visit with your dentist. More than likely you’d set it down some place and the sun would find it. Then mom would be livid trying to get that melted caramel off her couch cushions. Sugar Babies were far more kid friendly.

Jujubes- Another candy that would send you to the dentist. It was like eating gravel.

Necco Wafers– Let’s just hand out chalk to the kids, why don’t we. Do you notice that the list is basically what every kid in the ’60s could get at the theater’s concession stand. Where are the Milk Duds? Hell, give me Raisinets! These were tasteless. Handed out by adults with no kids

Circus Peanuts- Luckily not too many of these ended up in my sack. Like eating Styrofoam. Oh hey yeah, these ultimately became the modern day packing peanuts.

Like I said, I didn’t care for chocolate at the trick or treating age. Basically a Hershey’s was all the chocolate I’d consume. But back in the mid-sixties, that usually was the only chocolate that got handed out in bar form. The candy companies were late to the mini game, so they’d be full sized then. But I still had a pretty good haul in most years. Because I loved Sweet Tarts, Smarties, Starburst, etc. They were small and cheap, so they dominated on Halloween.

But at some point I found chocolate and I love it now. Especially the dark. A chocolate blackout cake is divine. What horrible candies did you get on Halloween?
